For the last two days we attended the 2nd European Rainbow Cities Conference in Barcelona, where people shared and listened to different experiences on LGBTI policies at local level in Europe. Organized by Ajuntament de Barcelona Diputació de Barcelona in collaboration with UVic.
The 2nd day of the IDAHOT Forum started with a short address by Dutch Minister for Education and Culture Jet Bussemaker from PvDA of. It was followed by a presentation by the European Commission DG Justice on the LGBTI list of actions and other actions for LGBTI. Julia Erht, Executive Director of TGEU – Transgender Europe presented the TGEU 2016 Map.
We also had the chance to exchange points of view and listen to the demands of Danish NGO’s representatives. They have a long history on the fight for LGBTI rights.
Belgian MEP Marie Arena from the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament: “When a child is born or adopted, it is very important for parents to be able to spend time with their child to develop a relationship. Having good parental leave conditions is essential to guarantee this.”

Another press release from Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament with Italian MEP Gianni Pittella President of the group: “We are very clear – equal rights are not a negotiable principle. It is not acceptable that in 2016, many people in civil partnerships or same-sex marriages do not have that status recognised when they move or travel to other EU countries. This is a bar to free movement of people and the EU must act to stop this form of discrimination.”

A recent Finnish Citizen Initiative proposes that a new Maternity Law should be passed with some other small changes to the existing legislation, in order to accommodate the new Maternity Law.
This new initiative covers female same-sex couples, who receive in-vitro fertilization and the child, who is born into this family.
The new Maternity Law would include the same rights to recognize the other mother in same sex relationship as the child’s guardian, in the same way as a father can legally be recognized as the guardian, in the current law. On 6 April 2016 Dutch citizens will vote on the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement by referendum. Beside economic and commercial interests, human rights and LGBTI rights in particular are put in the debate. The Dutch government supports three campaigns initiatives echoing concerns of Ukrainian LGBT groups.
